Early gay pioneer : Peter Hamecher

Peter Hamecher, An Openly Gay German Essayist From The Early Twentieth Century The American historian Hubert Kennedy included his compatriot James Barr, author of “Quatrefoil” (1950) – a milestone in gay literature which has been republished in 1991 – in his “Reading Gay History: Selected Essays and Reviews” (Concord 2006), which is otherwise mainly dedicated to European subjects. Kennedy not only focuses on Barr’s debut novel but also on his other work, including the articles he submitted to the early gay magazines, like “One Magazine” and the “Mattachine Review,” because, as Kennedy says, “all his writings are worth recalling.”

Settlement for gay couple that was chased from their Utrecht home

The Utrecht municipality, the public Prosecution and the Utrecht police have altogether come to a financial settlement with Hans van Gemmert and Ton Daalhuizen – the gay couple that was bullied and harassed in 2010 by youngsters to an extend that they had to leave the Utrecht neighborhood Leidsche Rijn.

‘People that are different are born sick!’

In September youngsters filmed the response of random people in several neighborhoods to the photo installations of Pride Photo Award 2011. The clips showed how superficial tolerance and acceptance of homosexuality still is: it’s fine if you think you’re gay ‘as long as I don’t have to see it!’ The winning photos of Pride Photo Award 2011 were displayed outside on several squares in the city and youngsters filmed short interviews with passers by. The photos show the diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and play with images of masculinity and femininity.

Questions in parliament on anti-gay violence in Eindhoven

PvdA (Social Democrat) MP Ahmed Marcouch asked Minister of Security and Justice Ivo Opstelten about anti-gay violence in Eindhoven. Visitors of gay club PallaZ on the Stratumsedijk are regularly harassed and attacked. In September two men repeatedly harassed PallaZ visitors until they were finally caught and fined when a police car just happened to pass by.

Marriage celebrant contests resignation in court

Wim Pijl, the marriage celebrant in The Hague that was fired in November last year because he refused to marry same-sex couples on the basis of conscientious objections, will contest his resignation in court. Big step towards acknowledgement of the right to self-determination for transgen

The government has sent a proposal to the house of representatives, which aims to make it easier for transgenders to change their sex registration. Transgender Netwerk Nederland (TNN) and COC Nederland say this is a big step forward. Both organizations have been calling for new legislation since 2008, they hope parliament will put it on the agenda soon.
