Liturgy for Transgender People in Protestant Church

The Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PKN) now offers a nationally established liturgy that can be used in a worship service in which a transgender person presents himself with a new name and receives a blessing.

Pastoral care assistant Theo Hettema
The Protestant Churchis therefore the first church in our country that makes this possible and gives transgender people a full-fledged place in the church. The idea for the extension of the liturgical service book came from a transgender woman living in the province of Drenthe. She received the blessing in her own Protestant congregation, but liked to see this country-wide.

The church then set up a working group led by Theo Hettema, a pastoral care assistant at the Protestant Church. For compiling the liturgy, the working group spoke with transgender people and theologians, among others.

The liturgical ritual developed on the basis of those conversations has now been added to the service book that the church already has for special occasions. The text consists of an introduction, a text for name presentations and blessing of a transgender person in worship, a few additional blessing texts and song suggestions, and prayers for personal and pastoral use.

Hettema still finds it difficult to estimate whether the new liturgy within the Protestant Churchwill lead to more acceptance of transgender people. “It will be mixed. In some municipalities, the issue does not come up, and other municipalities are very happy with it. " The ministers also have the option to give it a personal twist.

The Protestant Church is the first church to record a text for trans people nationwide. Hettema does point out that there are also rituals within the Anglican Church to bless the name change.
