Young Black Gay Men Portrayed in ‘Father Figure’

For young black gay men it can be difficult to find their way in this world. What does it mean to be young, black and gay? Guilliano (26) is the founder of The Kiki House of Angels, a Vogue dance community in Rotterdam. Most members are young, black gay men who face racism and exclusion in daily life.

Guilliano explains: “If you are black and gay, you are always two-nil behind...” In the movie “Father Figure,” Guilliano and his friends share their experiences with homophobia, racism and exclusion in daily life in a personal way. To them, Voguing is not only a temporary escape from the outside world, but it also represents a sense of family that makes them feel at home.

This poetic collage film tells their stories by combining observational scenes with Vogue dance sequences, graphic intermezzos and intimate interviews. Guilliano struggles with the harsh reality of life outside of his community. To survive in the outside world, he must hide certain parts of his personality. Voguing offers a temporary escape, but for how long?

“Father Figure” is directed by Bibi Fadlalla, who attended the University of Amsterdam and The New School in New York. She made her début with the documentary “Zwarte Piet en ik” (2012). Her pitch for the documentary “That Hair!” (2016) came first at the Innoversity Parade, was broadcast on national television and was selected for the Netherlands Film Festival in 2017.

Her musical documentary “Kendis” (2017) premièred at Dutch movie festival Cinekid 2017, was selected for IDFA’s Kids & Docs competition as well as for (children’s) film festivals in Toronto, Chicago, Tbilisi, Thessaloniki and Tel Aviv, among others.

Father Figure” (2019, 25 minutes, Dutch spoken) is a co-production of Hazazah Pictures with NTR (producers Maarten Kuit and Sam Godfried). NTR is the independent Dutch public service broadcaster specialising in information, education and culture. The film will be broadcasted on Sunday, September 22 at 23:25hrs on NPO 3 and can be watched again via NPO Start.
