On April 25 and 26 more than two hundred people attended the European conference “Focus on LGBTIQ+ Seniors” in Amsterdam. For two days good examples of, information about and inspiration for more inclusivity of GLBTIQ+ seniors were at the forefront.
On Thursday there were activities for, by and with elderly GLBTIQ+ people, which were attended by some 180 foreign participants. They took part in a guided tour around the Pink Halls, sailed with a boat of home care organization Cordaan to hear their story about an inclusive policy, or watched “Roze Cast,” a dance production by pink seniors.
On Friday more than two hundred guests from all over Europe and even from the United States and Canada participated in the conference at the Amsterdam Public Library. They listened to presentations by international researchers about the situation of elderly GLBTIQ+ people. Furthermore there were workshops, inspiration sessions and presentations about good practical examples. From workshops about a European quality mark for GLBTIQ+ affability for care and welfare, and the role of ambassadors, to inspiration sessions about the power of life stories and the development of an e-learning about GLBTIQ+ seniors. And of course there were plenty of opportunities for networking and making new international contacts.
Participant reactions expressed the exigency of this conference: “What an amazing day of sharing best practices, ideas and stories.” “What a party! The conference was great!!!” “I am still very much flashed by the many impressions and encounters.” The conference was organized by the city of Amsterdam, the European Rainbow Cities Network and Roze 50+ (= ANBO + COC), in cooperation with IHLIA.
