James Ivory’s Maurice Digitally Restored

The film “Maurice” (GB 1987) by James Ivory - after the semi-autobiographical novel by E.M. Forster - is back in the cinema in a digitally restored version (4K), English spoken, Dutch subtitles, 140 minutes.

In this movie adaptation of Forster’s narrative about forbidden homosexual love in 1914, Hugh Grant and James Wilby are the lead actors. The book was only released for publication in 1970. In 2018, director James Ivory (89) received an Oscar for the scenario of “Call Me by Your Name” (Luca Guadagnino).

“Maurice” evokes the suffocating conformity of English society on the eve of the First World War. Maurice Hall (James Wilby) and Clive Durham (Hugh Grant) are students at the University of Cambridge and fall in love. Because homosexuality is punishable by law in post-Victorian England, they have to keep their feelings completely confidential - in 1895, for instance, the poet-dandy and public personality Oscar Wilde was sentenced to two years in prison for his “association” with Lord Alfred Douglas.

After a friend has been arrested on similar charges, Clive leaves his forbidden love and marries a young woman. “Maurice” was nominated for an Oscar and won the Silver Lion of the Venice film festival.

Next to “Maurice,” the Amsterdam Eye Film Museum also shows digital restorations of James Ivory’s “Heat and Dust” (1983), “Autobiography of a Princess” (1975), “Shakespeare Wallah” (1965) and “Howards End” (1992; also based on a novel by E.M. Forster).
