Hot Doubles at the Amsterdam Sauna NZ

It remains intriguing to see men in the same pose, both clothed and nude. Currently the exhibition “Hot Doubles” is on view at Sauna NZ. The exhibition shows works from the ongoing project of photographer Ewoud Broeksma - models who are photographed both dressed and naked, in the same pose.

The show is a first collaboration between NZ and Gallery MooiMan male-art, compiler and publisher of the book “Dubbelaars / Doubles II.”

It was remarkable that, during the opening of this exhibition, not only scantily clad visitors of the gay sauna could see the exhibition from the lounge area, but dressed visitors outside of the building could also have a voyeuristic peek at the exhibition out of curiosity. Thus, it was possible to have both clothed and semi-nude visitors (with towel) at the opening of the exhibition.

In 2012, a first exhibition was organized in reference to the book “Dubbelaars / Doubles I,” in which photographer Ewoud Broeksma showed the first results of his ongoing project. This first book and the exhibition turned out to be a great success. The photographed men have no experience being a model. Often, these men are athletes who have no scruples about showing their trained body, both clothed and naked. Broeksma is known for regularly getting these athletes in front of the camera. However, most of the models for “Dubbelaars / Doubles II” - with a few exceptions - are not professional athletes. According to Broeksma, using only athletes would not give an honest picture of what the “average man” dresses and looks like without clothes.

The models in the book are categorized by sport, profession or age. These double portraits show a wide variety in build, length, width and age bracket. The book is not about their nakedness, but about the question whether the expression “clothes make the man” has any merit to it. This raises questions as well, as your expectations can be different from what is revealed by reality.

In connection with the exhibition, gallery owner Sandro Kortekaas asked Ewoud Broeksma some questions about his project.

“Hot Doubles” is an exhibition in a “hot” environment. How does it feel to have a show among both dressed and undressed men?
“Very relaxed and fun! I’m not one of the people being portrayed, by the way. And when you’re talking to someone, you’re not looking midway all the time, or what?”

For the official opening of “Hot Doubles,” gallery MooiMan organized an original photo shoot with the employees of Sauna NZ as part of the exhibition. How did that go?
“The photo shoot went rather swimmingly. It had to be, with so little time before the sauna opened. It was easy to instruct the main character, journalist Joseph, who is a former employee of Sauna NZ. The staff went the proverbial extra mile to make everything possible from a technical point of view.”

In January 2019, you want to organize an extra photo shoot in Amsterdam. Will that take place at NZ as well, and how many models will you need for that?
“Yes, somewhere in January at NZ. Keep an eye out at the sauna’s website for the specific day of the shoot. The photo shoot will take place in the early morning hours, as the sauna well open afterwards. People are also welcome during the shoot, depending on the hustle and bustle of the moment. And you can decide to participate on the spot. Bring a work or hobby item. Full names are not mentioned in the project, only the hobby/employment and age."

The book “Doubles / Dubbelaars II,” but also individual photos are for sale at the sauna. How is the project getting on? Earlier, you also made pictures of GLBTI asylum seekers. Will there be a sequel: “Doubles / Dubbelaars III”?

“Yes, there will. I am eager to start working on a third book. After all, it is an intriguing contradiction: dressed versus undressed. People are still enthusiastic about the project. The nude male is interesting to see. Look at all those dating shows on TV. The world keeps spinning, right?”

Hot Doubles, up to and including February 28, 2019, at
Sauna Nieuwezijds, Nieuwezijds Armsteeg 95, Amsterdam
The book “Dubbelaars / Doubles” is also available at the sauna (€ 33.50)
