The Supervisory Board of the foundation has announced that Mr. Mark Vermeulen is to be the new Director of Aidsfonds-Soa Aids the Netherlands. Mark Vermeulen (39) brings 10 years of experience and was an internal candidate.

As its new leader, he wants to give a new impulse to the fight against HIV/AIDS and STDs in The Netherlands and in the world. He is the first Director who is openly living with HIV.

Yvonne Wilders, chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Netherlands Aidsfonds-Soa Aids: "Aidsfonds-Soa the Netherlands is an organization that, in both the Netherlands and the rest of the world, is recognized for its impact, innovative approach, and unconditional support to the people who are the most affected by STDs and HIV/AIDS. With Mark Vermeulen as Director, the Supervisory Board is convinced that the organization will be even more involved, and with a higher level of ambition. As a 'new generation' leader and with his enthusiasm and personality, he will bring a lot of (new) people together, which is necessary for the fight against HIV/AIDS and STDs."

Mark Vermeulen has been HIV positive since 2007 and is very open about it, precisely to counteract the stigma around HIV/AIDS. His drive is to support people with HIV in the Netherlands and in the world, and, in unison with them, put an end to the AIDS epidemic.

Mark Vermeulen, Director Aidsfonds-Soa Aids Netherlands: "It really depends on where you are born whether you have access to life-saving medicines. In the Netherlands I can live with HIV without much problems, but that does not hold true for everyone. Certainly not in other regions in the world. I want to put an end to this inequality. Also, a final major effort is needed in the Netherlands. It is unacceptable that each year, more than 700 people are diagnosed HIV and that 100,000 people in our country contract an STD. This number can and must be drastically reduced. It is my goal to make The Netherlands the first country with zero new HIV infections."

In his new role as Director, Mark Vermeulen is responsible for the future direction of Aidsfonds-Soa Aids the Netherlands. Together with the people who are the most affected by STDs and HIV, the Dutch government, doctors, health care professionals, and other civil society organizations, he wants to work toward zero new HIV infections in the Netherlands; a meaningful contribution to the end of HIV/AIDS in the world and a drastic reduction in the five most common STDs.
