COC Amsterdam returns to Rozenstraat

At the beginning of 2019, COC Amsterdam will return to its old address in Amsterdam, Rozenstraat 12. To this end, the representatives of COC Amsterdam, Vondel Hotels and real estate owner DVM signed an agreement for 10 years last November.

The agreement and the return to the Rozenstraat, is the beginning of a new phase. Late October, the 'straight friendly' Hotel Mercier opened its doors in the former COC building on the Rozenstraat. This brand-new hotel incorporates historical elements of the old community centre ‘Ons Huis,’ giving it a new lease on life. The lobby, for instance, was restored in the style of the old library. The restaurant incorporates elements of the old gymnasium. Bringing the neighbourhood together, bettering yourself and getting together was the philosophy of Helena Mercier, the founder of 'Ons Huis'. This philosophy now sees a continuation in the opening of Hotel Mercier.

Helena MercierAt the beginning of 2019, the volunteers of COC Amsterdam and other workers had full-time access to a spacious and comfortable space in the basement of the hotel for COC Amsterdam's office, meeting and workshop activities. Two afternoons a week, the library section of the hotel lobby is screened off for consultations without appointment, the monthly Open House and other activities.

The Get-together & Empowerment meetings for specific target groups and larger meetings will still be held at the Doven Ontmoetingscentrum (DOC) on Stadhouderskade 89. "The fantastic cooperation with the people of the DOC has contributed to the growth of our Get-together & Empowerment meetings. We would like to continue this cooperation in the years to come," Peter de Ruijter, President of COC Amsterdam notes.

Peter de Ruijter: "This is the official start of a beautiful new cooperation. Together with Vondel Hotels and DVM we are starting a new chapter for this historical and invaluable space for the Jordaan district and the LGBTIQ+ community. I am extremely proud to have achieved this in close cooperation."

We started at Rozenstraat as well, one door next to no. 12 at number 14, where many gay (related) organizations held office at the time. Of course it's a shame COC Amsterdam lost the building in the first place, but it's good to see them return.
