With winter fast approaching it takes some getting used to the colder weather after such an exceptionally hot summer. Luckily for us we have the A.S.V. Gay (Amsterdam Gay Student Union Gay) to help us get through the coming months with a large selection of activities for our members, as well as our weekly get-together every Wednesday, which provides the perfect opportunity to take a break from the somewhat mundane weekly study routine.

As secretary of the union I hope we can look forward to a successful year in which A.S.V.Gay can increase its popularity among ever more students. Our participation in the student unions circuit is of great importance because it can contribute to wider acceptance of the GLBTQ community. We aim to achieve this goal by intensifying our contacts with other student unions in Amsterdam, obtaining even more members and forming new partnerships.

Of course, A.S.V.Gay’s primary task is to ensure its members have an unforgettable time during their studies in Amsterdam. Amongst our members lifelong friendships are made, members participate in unique activities and partake in many journeys abroad throughout the entire year. A.S.V.Gay is a union that truly contributes to student’s lives.

Although providing various forms of relaxation for our members is one of our union’s main objectives, it’s just as important that we as a student union are involved in doing something for the community. For example, we recently volunteered at the opening of the “Roze Hallen” (Pink Halls) in Amsterdam, where we provided all the hospitality needs for the guests.

Furthermore, on November 9 we joined forces with club EXIT in Amsterdam, where we threw a party at this fabulous nightspot combined with a charity event to help raise money for GLBTQ refugees. Guests were invited to make a contribution at the door. The final amount will be donated to “Stichting Regenboog” (Rainbow Foundation), that has developed a buddy system to advance the integration of GLBTQ refugees in the Netherlands.

Anyone still interested in making a donation to Regenboog:! All donations are welcome.

With such a diverse range of activities we hope to inspire GLBTQ community members to join A.S.V.Gay. Before I became a member, more than three years ago now, I barely knew any GLBTQ people, and this was the main reason I found the gay scene too daunting. Since then the tide has turned and thanks to the union I feel completely at home in Amsterdam.

Of course, I tried all kinds of dating apps before I joined A.S.V.Gay, but, to be honest, these couldn’t compete by a long shot with the more accessible way of meeting someone in a union or a bar. Besides which it is much more efficient to be able to form a general impression at a glance and to strike up a pleasant conversation while enjoying a drink.
