Gay Pride Curaçao Demands the Introduction of Same-Sex Marriage

Three organizations on Curaçao that are fighting for equal rights and sexual diversity, presented a bill to Parliament during Gay Pride in the capital Willemstad. This bill should make same-sex marriage possible, among other things.

As part of the Gay Pride, hundreds of people participated in the Gay Walk between the city districts of Punda and Otrobanda. Spokesman Mario Kleinmoedig gives the Parliament a year to get the bill through. "We will not wait and do nothing. Acceptance is great, but this is about equal rights."

The organizations have had enough of the sluggishness of Parliament. For years, they have been fighting for this. Last year, they got support from the island's new Prime Minister, Eugene Rhuggenaath.

He called on Curaçao to embrace diversity, and called himself the Prime Minister of all the people on Curaçao. Unfortunately, not much changed. Until now, Parliament did not dare to debate diversity. The subject is seen as ‘too sensitive’.

The Curaçao Pride attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world, but there is much resistance on the predominantly Catholic island. In 2013, the police intervened and cancelled the Gay Pride of that year. Early October, the rainbow flag, symbol of the gay movement, was burned by a group of unknown young people on the streets.

According to the Prime Minister Rhuggenaath, however, the time for a debate on the subject is now: "The exclusion and discrimination of the LGBT community are about human rights."
