A.S.V.Gay Stands by Diversity, also Regarding Nationality

A.S.V. Gay’s general meeting took place on October 2, 2018. From this day on, we are now officially the ninth board of student association A.S.V.Gay. Fantastic! Now, we can finally get started with our plans and ideas.

In the first weekend of October, the introduction weekend took place. A weekend full of fun, (crazy) games, drink and bonding with the new members. The weekend also meant the end of a successful introduction period. A.S.V.Gay welcomed many new members. New friendships were forged, and perhaps occasionally, Cupid managed to bring two people together. After this final introduction weekend, things settled down at A.S.V.Gay. All committees have been restructured, resulting in a relatively quiet month of October. On October 10th, the board had organized an Oktoberfest drink.

Of course, there was the Coming Out Day of October 11th, a socially significant day for the GLBTQ+ community. On this day, coming out of the closet takes centre stage, which can still be a difficult process for many. Therefore, it is important that we reflect on this and do something with it.

Of our new members, a large number is of foreign origin. For many expats, A.S.V.Gay is an important student’s association. These member on the whole are in Amsterdam for one or two semesters. For them it is pleasant that they find themselves in an GLBTQ+ friendly environment. It is what A.S.V.Gay is all about. During the introduction period, people from no less than fifteen different countries joined, to know Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Italy, China, the United States, Panama, Australia, Turkey, Austria, Norway, Italy, Thailand and South Korea. These international members give A.S.V.Gay its great dynamics, making our association even more diverse.

All in all, I am very proud of the fact that I am part of this fantastic board. With the six of us, we all come from a very different background, but together share a beautiful mission and vision.

On the board, your life and actions are scrutinized. Everything we do is met with a critical eye. Each member has a different opinion. We can never please everyone, and it will be a year of trial and error for everyone on the board. All for the benefit of our education. But above all, I hope it will be a great, fun and fantastic year.
