Dolly Bellefleur’s Statement Against Violence

by our Editors in Columns & Opinions , 03 augustus 2018

Dit artikel is ook in het Nederlands beschikbaar

Dolly Bellefleur is the alter-ego of cabaret performer and lyricist Ruud Douma. For twenty-eight years now, Dolly is “Frau Antje van het Verkeerde Kantje” (Miss Antje of the Other Side), both on the barricades and on stage. As winner of the Canal Parade 2017, Dolly Bellefleur & Friends will sail the Amsterdam canals again this year.

The theme of La Bellefleur’s boat is: We’ve Got The Power!

With this boat, Dolly Bellefleur & Friends want to make a statement against the increase in violence against GLBTI people. We will not let ourselves be driven back into the closets! Let love rule! Armed with pink triangles Dolly and a hundred Dolly look-alikes step into the breach for love. By giving the pink triangle an important role in the design of the boat, Dolly Bellefleur & Friends want to pay tribute to the pink heroes of the past. In the days before the rainbow came into fashion, the pink triangle was the proud sign of the gay movement in the battle for acceptance and equal rights.

Dolly wrote a special song for this Pride, which starts with the lines:
“When you’re walking down the street / As a boy with your boyfriend / Show him that you love him so / Walk together hand in hand / Love is great, don’t be afraid / Be yourself, don’t hesitate / You are stronger than you think / We can colour this world pink.”

In a next strophe La Bellefleur states:
“You can be a Superman / And still wear a wedding gown / When you marry your Batman / Let nobody bring you down / Love is great, don’t be afraid / Be yourself, don’t hesitate / You can do all you can / Say I am what I am.”

This text was visualized by Wilbert van der Steen in a cartoon.
