“Things will work out in the end”

Opera singer Francis van Broekhuizen (42) not only makes her dream début as Pride Amsterdam ambassador, but also at the National Opera later this year. Between times of her various performances she tells about her life, work, ambassadorship and life motto “Humour lightens life.”

At a young age, she could never have imagined becoming an opera singer. She grows up in a family with two brothers in the fashionable city of Wassenaar. After secondary school, she takes up nursing school. After her classes, she spends a lot of time on opera and singing. In these, she dedicates her soul and happiness. After finishing nursing school, she decides to follow her heart. Francis is going to study vocal arts in Amsterdam.

It soon becomes apparent that she made the right choice. She becomes a familiar face in Dutch opera, where she sings, with famous companies such as the Nederlandse Reisopera, Opera Zuid and Opera Spanga. Since the age of sixteen, Mary Callas is her big example. “She was the greatest opera singer of the twentieth century, and partly because of her singing and art I wanted to become an opera singer. Her life also appealed to my imagination: it was so intense.”

As a little girl, her room was full of photos of Callas. "We all need people that can function as an example to us. People you can mirror and look up to.” Francis has wonderful memories of the EuroPride Choir Festival she presented at the Concertgebouw two years ago. “Fabulous!”

This year will undoubtedly also mean a Pride she will never forget. “People see me as a role model because, as a lesbian, I come across as very natural. I really want to show young people that you can be true to yourself. I want to give someone heart.”

Francis’ motto?
“That, in all aspects in your life and through all of your actions, you try to be as true to yourself as possible. It has got me this far!”
