Student Life: My Experiences in Amsterdam as Gay Man from India

As we all know, Amsterdam is seen as the “Gay Capital of Europe,” probably for being the capital of first country to legalize gay marriage, and it’s high tolerance to all types of sexualities. Although my plan of moving to the Venice of the North was unexpected, so far I have had great adventures and lots of fun.

Coming from India, a developing country, where certain matters such as sex and certainly homosexuality is only whispered about behind the closed doors, I could never be true to myself and my loved ones. Just the idea of coming to Amsterdam invigorated me to shatter the barricades I had built and encouraged me to come out to a couple of my best friends.

Although the reaction was not the best, coming from thick eastern culture it wasn’t bad after all.

When I moved to Amsterdam I was astonished by the entire sexual spectrum that is being cherished in the canal city. The first couple of weeks I was trying to digest how openly the culture is and that couples of the same sex can hold hands or kiss publicly. This motivated me further to be my vulnerable self and not to be afraid of openly saying “I am gay.” Although it took me a couple of months, I was able to do it and the reactions I got made me feel so secure and accepted.

At this moment I have come out to most of my friends and family. So far I never have had a bad experience or rejection, but complete support and more love. I am planning to come out to my parents very soon, so that I don’t need to hide my homosexuality from anyone.

The gay associations in Amsterdam are really active and full of liveliness. One of the best decisions of my life has been joining “A.S.V.Gay,” through which I met incredible people who inspired me in many ways and made lots of lovely reminiscences. Through this student association I have had great memories, such as the “Ontrozing” weekend camp, the Halloween party, and Prom/Gala to name a few.

The best part of all this is that I met three incredible people who have become not only my best friends but also my family. The love and support I get from them makes me feel like I can conquer the world. Besides all this fun, I am also an active member of the A.S.V.Gay party committee, a little service in return.

I am hoping to be part of this incredible student association for a long time.

Overall, the beautiful Dutch capital has only inspired me to by myself and not to care about what others think or judge of me. It inspired me to set higher goals and achieve greater deeds in life as well as career. I am looking forward to what Amsterdam has to offer me in the future.
