This year, the Frisian capital Leeuwarden and Valetta on Malta were declared European Capital of Culture. Since 1985, this title is given, from 2004 onwards to two cities per year. On the occasion of this event, a packed program has been compiled, but the organization Gayslowdating decided to add a few extras.

This should not come as a surprise to anyone who is aware that Gayslowdating started in 2007, when three Frisian men gathered on a Sunday afternoon and wondered why there are no activities for single gay men. They decided to organize a forest walk in Beetsterzwaag, with a buffet afterwards. The interest was so overwhelming that it was then decided to develop other activities. Meanwhile, Gayslowdating has developed into an entrepreneurial organization with a unique concept.

From May 18-27, Gayslowdating will organize various activities in Friesland, leaving the participants the freedom to organize other outings as well. The participants will be accommodated on Tjeerd’s farm, situated in a beautiful spot amidst farmlands and nature, about seven kilometres from Leeuwarden.

The first weekend (May 18-21) is dedicated to the “11 Fountains” project. This project entails that in every city that is part of the skating tour “Elfstedentocht” (Eleven cities tour) a fountain is placed, made by a well-known international artist. These artworks will be visited by car or bicycle, with additional attention given to other projects.

From May 21-24 it will be possible to incorporate a certain activity to the program in consultation with the group, such as a visit to the “Gerard Reve Yn Fryslân” event.

The Saturday of the second weekend (May 26) is the day of the Pride in Leeuwarden. In the past three years, this event was organized under the name “GayStraightParade,” but this year a more unambiguous name was chosen. There will be various activities organized in the afternoons and evenings.

On Sunday, May 27, there will be a drawing-walking tour from 10:30 to 11:30, starting from the location the group is staying at. Under expert supervision of Doet Boersma, teacher and artist at the Art Academy Friesland, the group undertakes a nature walk where the principles of drawing and sketching are explained and tried out. In case of rain there will be worked from the farm.

The above only gives a limited impression of the activities Gayslowdating is going to undertake in Friesland. See for more information.
