Sixteenth Eurovision SongTravestival at New Location

Half of Europe is under the spell of the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, starting May 8. Will Waylon fare better with or without Ilse de Lange? Meanwhile, Song Contest and drag loving Amsterdam and indeed Holland is getting ready for its very own version of this battle - the sixteenth edition of the Eurovision SongTravestival.

This hilarious event showcases contestants from countries such as Yoo-hoocrania, Travestibet, Norgay, Jurkye, Trammelant, and Fantasialand. Everyone is welcome at this colorful event. “It is almost the same as the real Song Contest, but more fun!”

A Motley Crew

The participants certainly are a motley crew - with younger candidates and veterans giving their best. They will amaze the audience with a choice from over sixty years of Song Contest history and hysteria. A sneak preview: Miss Baksel, Dolly Wood, Pia Vapeur, Marlene XL, Agnes Geneva, Madame Maxime, and Dora Royale.

Koos van den Berg is the organizer of this special version of the Eurovision Song Contest. During the show, he will make the transformation to Coco Coquette and co-hosts with Mario Magic. “This year, it promises to be a wonderful and colorful evening, crammed with delightful Song Contest gems. True to tradition, we open the show with our very own version of ‘Un-Deux-Trois’ from 1976. I have high hopes for the Slutland entry. As hilarious as it gets,” the initiator says with a big smile. “It is just like the real Song Contest, but more fun!”

Everything is Live!

Coco Coquette: “They all sing live, and that’s unique in drag shows, in which playback plays first fiddle. I don’t mind playback at all, but I do prefer the real thing. Out of tune is also fine. Some have even taken extra singing lessons! A sneak preview? Saphira gives ‘Vrede’ by Ruth Jacott a make-over, and ‘Poupée de Cire’ should of course be included as a tribute to the recently deceased France Gall. Newcomer Wessela Haaksvrouw will prove that the winning song from 1965 has not lost any of its power.”

Counting the Points by Hand

This time, the professional jury consists of Lady Charity, Victoria False, and Merel Moistra. The audience, as tradition dictates, also has a say in who wins. Coco Coquette continues: “Is the singing sufficient? Does the candidate wear and have the proper ‘look’? Is it convincing? These aspects should make contestants get points. At the end, we count the points by hand and the winning song will be performed once more. Last year, Agnes Geneva won with Conchita Wurst’s ‘Rise Like A Phoenix.’ This year, she will be defending her title with ‘1944’ by Jamala (Ukraine 2016). I think it is a bold choice!”

This year, the EuroSongTravestival will take place on Saturday, May 5th, from 19:30 onwards. The venue is VOLTA, Houtmankade 336, near Haarlemmerplein. Tickets are € 15.00, including cloakroom and washing room facilities. Presale at Gays&Gadgets, Spuistraat 44, Amsterdam.  See for more information.
