GLAAD, the world’s largest GLBTQ media advocacy organization, announced that Olympic medalist Adam Rippon launched a fundraising campaign to support GLAAD’s culture-changing GLBTQ youth programs. The announcement was made during Rippon’s appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Ellen surprised him with a check for $10,000 to kick off his campaign.

Adam Rippon
Rippon won the world’s hearts while competing as an openly gay athlete in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang and helping the U.S. Figure Skating Team take home a bronze medal. “This year America fell in love with our GLBTQ Olympians, and Adam Rippon stood out in that esteemed crowd with his activism, passion, humor, and willingness to always be himself,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President of GLAAD. “Adam is a champion who will accelerate acceptance for GLBTQ youth and inspire them to achieve their dreams while proudly living their truth.”

Rippon’s desire to show up to life out and proud fueled his partnership with GLAAD. According to recent data, twenty percent of Millennials identify as GLBTQ. The research also shows a decline in GLBTQ acceptance. Rippon and GLAAD agree that the key to changing hearts and minds is the youth.

Speaking about his relationship with GLAAD to Ellen, Rippon said, “I’m working with [GLAAD’s] youth engagement program and you know this is so important because we’re reaching these kids and they’re becoming activists in their community. When I was young, to have somebody out there that I could’ve looked up to, it would’ve made a world of difference, and it would’ve changed my life. To have these young kids out there changing the world, this is something that I need to be a part of.” GLAAD’s Campus Ambassador Program primes GLBTQ young people to become the next generation of GLBTQ advocates by telling their personal stories, organizing local and national advocacy campaigns, and producing dynamic digital content and events.

Rippon wore a GLAAD “&” pin during his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to show solidarity for those most vulnerable to discrimination in the current cultural and political climate. GLAAD’s “&” pin represents the Together Movement, which seeks to unite marginalized communities to resist, persist, and prevail against discrimination.

Rippon Joins Britney Spears at the GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD also announced that Adam Rippon will join multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning pop icon Britney Spears onstage at the twenty-ninth Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles at Beverly Hilton.  These Media Awards honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of GLBTQ people and issues. Spears will receive the Vanguard Award, which is presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance.

Britney Spears is one of the most successful and celebrated entertainers in pop history with more than one hundred million records sold worldwide. She is a longtime ally and supporter of the queer community. She has consistently stood up for GLBTQ youth on GLAAD’s Spirit Day by going purple on social media to speak out against bullying.

Spears also has a legacy of deeply embracing her GLBTQ fans. She wrote a highly publicized letter to a young gay man who considered suicide, but credited her music and lyrics with giving him the courage to come out and be true to himself. She wrote to him: “I was very happy to hear how courageous you’ve been about being openly gay. I’ve always been told as long as you know in your heart that’s what matters most.” After a gay couple who met at the opening of “Britney: Piece of Me” married, she surprised them with a touching video to send congratulations and show her support for marriage equality.

Most recently, for Gay Pride Month in 2017, Spears penned a heartwarming love letter to the GLBTQ community on Billboard Pride in which she shared that the community’s unwavering loyalty and acceptance uplift and inspire her. “I have a secret to share with you. You see it’s actually you that lifts me up. The unwavering loyalty. The lack of judgment. The unapologetic truth. Acceptance! Your stories are what inspire me, bring me joy, and make me and my sons strive to be better people.”

“She is a force in the music world who has used her global platform to share messages of love and acceptance, something that the world needs today more than ever,” said GLAAD’s Sarah Kate Ellis.
