‘All in All, Being Mr. Bear Is A Great Honor’

Marcel van Doorn (45) is Mr. Bear The Netherlands 2017. His election was not unexpected.

“I had a great support team, and everything went swimmingly during the show at The Eagle. In the period following my election, I was quite overwhelmed. I felt like an ambassador: I traveled extensively, and met with countless representatives of various scenes. Think of a Mr. Puppy, a Mr. Leather, and numerous Mr. Bears. Just like a real ambassador, I had to comply with official rules. For example, I wasn’t allowed to smoke, drink alcohol or have sex while wearing my sash. The solution? At a party, I took it off after 01:00 a.m.’

According to Marcel (“Don’t forget to mention I am also active in other scenes”), Mr. Bear The Netherlands 2018 needs communicative skills and have a strong personality. Just being yourself is also important. “Don’t forget: you were chosen by the jury and the public, and there are good reasons for that. Apparently you did something right and should be proud of yourself. So own it and show it! You can expect the most diverse questions, ranging from ‘What exactly do you stand for?’ to ‘For God’s sake, why are you doing this?’

The best approach usually is to just give a straight and honest answer. But there is nothing wrong with engaging in a discussion. However, you need to do this is a respectful way. In the back of your mind, you need to remember that you are representing the bear community.”

Marcel continues by saying that you do need to have an affinity with this community. “Of course, you are representing a group; in other words, something larger than yourself. I tried to be as visible as possible. Not just physically, but also through my attitude: open, tolerant, and open to criticism. Together we’re strong. This is the message I want to send to the new Mr. Bear. Not being afraid of the spot lights, the camera or the microphone is also recommended. I invested a lot of time in the year I was Mr. Bear, but that wasn’t a problem. On the contrary: all in all, being Mr. Bear is a great honor.”
