Student Life: Constitution Drinks and Activities

We have a new group of members each year. Students with different backgrounds, different studies, and with their own stories. Our student union has approximately 280 members.

Everyone is more than welcome, and we try to create an environment in which everyone feels at home and safe. Wherever you are in your coming-out phase and whatever your story is.

In order to completely integrate new members, we have organized a fun introductory period by the introductory committee. The members join their “new family,” so that they can get to know the other members through games and activities.

Now the new academic year has begun and the introduction period is over, we are busy with our first activities and, as a board, we are mainly having constitutional drinks. Constitutional drinks, or “cobo’s,” are get-togethers with drinks to introduce the new board.

At A.S.V.Gay we are not corporal, but we do like a party. We bring drinks to a constitution get-together, and we always try to find an appropriate gift with a gay touch. We visit “cobo’s” of other student unions in Amsterdam, but also of our sister unions throughout the Netherlands. Our sister unions can be found in Utrecht, Nijmegen, Delft, Tilburg and Groningen. As sisters we come together several times a year to organize drinks and weekends. With our sister unions, we create a place where GLBTQ+ students can feel safe and enjoy student life with each other.

Now the “cobo” season is almost over, we are focussing on other activities organized by various committees and societies. We organize activities such as trampoline dodge ball and skating to show off our sporty sides. There is the annual show “A.S.V.Gay’s Got Talent” for our creative, musical and / or sensitive side.

A symposium and movie night are organized by the current affairs committee. The outings committee organizes weekends, also in cooperation with our sister unions. We are always well-represented at Canal Pride because of our Pride committee. Several parties are organized throughout the year by our party committee. And last but not least, our drinks committee ensures a small party at Amstel 54 bar each Wednesday.
There are several societies within our union. Societies organize activities for specific groups within the union. We have a theatre society, a games society, and an international society.

Thus, all committees and societies ensure that there are more than enough activities organized throughout the year, while the board sees to it that everything runs smoothly.
