Student Life: Open Drinks And A New Board

by Sanne van Lochem in Columns & Opinions , 16 oktober 2017

With a few remaining beers running through my bloodstream and a light thumping feeling in my forehead, I look back at a successful night. The first open drink as the new chair of Amsterdam’s most fun GLBTQ+ student association, A.S.V.Gay, is an accomplished fact. The introduction period is in full swing. New members and everyone who is interested could get a first taste of our weekly drinks.

Last year I was, slightly nervous,in exactly the same position at one of the introduction drinks. It did not take long. An hour and a couple of beers later I was easily persuaded – coincidentally by the upcoming vice-president - to immediately join the association.

This did not only become a year of drinks, parties, trips and beer. But also a year of meaningful discussion, an enlarged awareness of the total gender and sexuality spectrum and unique stories about coming out, pride and being yourself.

The stories and my own feeling of wanting to contribute to the association stimulated me eventually, still as a kind of newbie, to apply for a position on the board. After the final call that I would really be the candidate chair, an exciting period began. My board members and I were officially chosen by the GMM (general members meeting) in June. We could start preparing! But how does it work behind the scenes, running an association? And how were we going to write our policy plan?

Communication is, like in a happy marriage, also important for a bunch of students. So after receiving a flood of information we were - in the spirit of teambuilding - blindfolded and send off. I will have to keep the events which happened quiet.

But it did have much to do with taking shots of our familiar association drink, pink Trojka. Also the details of the infamous dessert game can’t be disclosed.

At this moment the preparations are still up and running. The meetings are intense, the policy plan is almost finished and the pink hammer is being polished for the GMM of the GMMs. The official switch of boards is during the end of September. An exciting moment! In that moment the responsibility is officially transferred from board 7 to board 8. From then on it’s our moment the upcoming year.

I am immensely looking forward to all the activities, colorful people I will meet, and all the new things I will learn about myself. I, for sure, could never have thought that the following words hesitatingly uttered by an insecure sixteen-year-old, “Mom, dad, someday in the future I might bring a girl home...,” eventually could lead to being the chair of an GLBTQ+ student organization in Amsterdam. Sometimes unexpected things happen.

And those hesitatingly uttered words? Nowadays they are full of pride, when I bring my girlfriend home to my parents.
