The Board, Troika, and General Meetings

Some weeks ago, A.S.V.Gay celebrated its seventh anniversary. We had a toast on our anniversary at our weakly drink with a shot of our notorious drink, the Troika. The Troika shot is inexplicably linked with A.S.V.Gay: pink, sweet, and a little spicy. We drink it too often, and drink too much of it, just as Sambuca gets too much when you are over twenty years of age.

Our seventh anniversary also means that we as Board 7 are mid-term and can now harass our successors with all this pink stuff. It will not come as a surprise, but on the evening of the board change we have a toast. Predecessor and successor have a shot of - there it is again - Troika! As the Selection Committee has been set up now, it is the start of an exciting period. Who will apply? Who aspires to which board function? Can the next board match or even exceed the seventh board? The only thing I’m sure of is that they can handle their liquor better than me.

A year on the board, however, means more than just Troika. You devote an entire year of your life to A.S.V.Gay, you put in a lot of hours a week, and you’ll be invited to all sorts of cool parties and social events. Think of parties by other organizations, the annual True Colors, parties and events at universities, and much more. It is hard work and sometimes tough, but also satisfying. In the end, it is great fun and offers a great learning curve.

The bi-annual general meeting usually is the start. The meeting discusses the progress and events made in and organized over the past six months. Members have the opportunity to praise, criticize, and bring forth new ideas. This year, the members were rather quiet, but let’s think of it as a good sign. A perhaps even more exciting part of the evening is setting up the Selection Committee. Once approved, the search for a new board can begin. The applications are open, and those interested can now focus on their application. The grapevine about who perhaps is going to apply is also in full force.

During one’s year on the board, many ideas surface, with one idea more readily achievable than the other. Some ideas can also be realized faster, giving you more time to crystallize another. Several ideas are presented to the next board, maybe they can indeed begin to fully realize a great idea. The latter is mostly important in showing the ropes. Soon after the selected board is approved in June, the training process begins. This is both a fun time working with the previous board, and individually between predecessor and successor. What exactly happens during this settling in, and what strange things you need to do, remain a secret. Well, maybe more of a public secret. Then of course, the real work starts when the next pink board is in office! Anyway, they’d better be good.
