D66 and GroenLinks introduce PrEP reimbursement motion

by our Editors in Health & Body , 09 december 2016

Preventing HIV with the HIV prevention pill PrEP is something Dutch parties D66 and GroenLinks now also want. Both parties submitted a motion in parliament last November to compensate PrEP for people who run a high risk of contracting HIV as of next year.

According to the initiators of the motion, Pia Dijkstra (D66) and Linda Voortman (GroenLinks), “The Netherlands are not keeping up with the times”. Both Members of Parliament were present at PrEP TALK, the debate on the HIV prevention pill in De Balie in Amsterdam. This debate was organised by Aids Fonds and COC Netherlands. Convinced of the effectiveness and necessity of PrEP, they promised to look for ways to make reimbursement of the pill possible.

With this motion, Dijkstra and Voortman respond to repeated appeals by the Aids Fonds and COC. In the Netherlands, there are over 1,000 new HIV infections on a yearly basis, with 69% in the high-risk group of men who have sex with men (MSM). Most of these could be prevented with PrEP. In various countries, such as France, Canada, Australia, Norway, South-Africa, and the US, it was already made available, and with success.

“Making PrEP available is not only good news for patients, but would also mean considerable cost savings, as less life-long HIV treatments will be necessary. In addition to this, PrEP usage reduces a big fear that lives in the high-risk group,” Dijkstra and Voortman argue.

They propose to make available a € 3 million grant to the Health Authority to provide more people in the high-risk group access to PrEP.
