On Saturday, December 10, Eric Wiss will give a lecture about the controversial Dutch author Gerard Reve (1923–2006) and Catholicism with the title “U heb ik lief”. In the lecture, he will try to find answers to questions such as: Which factors played a part in Gerard Reve’s conversion to Catholicism, and which people influenced him in this decision.
What attracted Reve to Catholicism, and to what extent was his conversion heartfelt? The lecture will explicitly discuss his worshiping of the Virgin Mary.
Directly after the lecture, the first part of “Mother of Mankind” (1987) will be screened, the legendary series on the veneration of the Blessed Virgin that program maker Je Rademakers made with Gerard Reve in the 1980s. In this episode, Gerard Reve visits several places of pilgrimage in the Netherlands and Germany.
Naturally, attention will also be paid to the recent English translation of “De Avonden” by Sam Garrett. Amsterdam FM presenter Bert van Galen will discuss the translation process of “The Evenings: A Winter’s Tale” with the translator. The book is published by Pushkin Press, London.
This Gerard Reve event will take place on Saturday, December 10, from 14:00-16:00 at the OBA Theater of the Central Library (OBA), Oosterdokskade 143, 1011 DL Amsterdam. Admission: 10.00 Euros.
