Dear Neighbors to the North, The bishop of Antwerp, Johan Bonny, regularly reaches out to the gay community. In his new book, which was published last month, he thinks aloud about new church rituals. According to the bishop, new forms of cohabitation, for example gay couples and legally cohabiting straight couples, should be included.
A new church ritual, not to be confused with a sacrament like marriage, would be the solution to keep gay and lesbian couples in the Church.
Bonny’s attempts are undoubtedly noble, but the brave bishop stands alone in the Church with his proposals. In Rome, nor in the rest of the world, will any church leader be willing to support him. With his statements, he immediately gives up all hope of ever becoming archbishop of Belgium.
The bishop’s words did not impress the queer community. The majority of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people has brains and knows from experience that when we have to suffer from hatred, discrimination and prejudice, the only culprit in almost the entire world is either the Catholic Church or some other religion. Over 2,000 years, the gay community had to suffer all the sins of Israel for not being able to “reproduce.” “Reproduction” is the ultimate way to sustain a corrupt and criminal institute as is the Church.
Even dictators, present and past, like to apply this method, as “what’s learnt in the cradle lasts till the tomb” is a basic principle of indoctrination. Those who are raised in a faith or a doctrine from a young age are more likely to stick to that faith or doctrine. Simple as that.
Because of this Catholic tradition, or that of Islam, we have to keep fighting a losing battle. When we finally can make a step forward, the moment comes we have to take two steps back. Eternal optimists will say that at the end of the day we still make progress, even though nobody knows where the end of the line is.
Religions are, and will always be, the source of all hatred of gays and discrimination. Without the Catholic Church and Islam, homosexuals wouldn’t be considered “unnatural” or thrown from buildings. The Catholic Church as an institution par excellence is itself a place of homosexual corruption, while they keep lecturing gay believers.
The ideal world is a world without religion - especially for the GLBT community. In his book “Religion for Atheists” the British philosopher Alain de Botton describes how a world without religion and without metaphysical belief, but retaining all values that ever - although under false pretenses - were propagated by the doctrine of those religions, is perfectly possible. Abolish religions, but keep the good values. His world view is my world view, as it could be for the queer community. A suggestion for reading material during the upcoming cold winter months perhaps?
