There will be more clarity about the regulations on multi-parenthood early December. Minister Van der Steur made this promise to gay interest group COC when Ouders van Nu, Meer dan Gewenst, and COC offered him a petition.
The Minister underlined the importance of good multi-parenthood regulations during the conversation with the COC. He has commissioned the State Commission Reassessment Parenthood to look into the matter, and expects to send their proposal to the Dutch Lower House early December.
While presenting the nearly 5,000 signatures, COC President Tanja Ineke called on the Minister to quickly come to good multi-parenthood regulations.
“Children are entitled to a good legal relationship with all of their parents, whether there are one, two, three or four parents in place,” Ineke noted. “It is in the interest of the children in families with multiple-parents that their legal situation matches the actual situation in which they grow up.”
More and more people form a multi-parent family, for example a lesbian couple raising a child with a bisexual man or a gay couple. COC Netherlands estimates that it now concerns thousands of families in the Netherlands. According to Dutch law, a child is not allowed to have more than two parents. That can get children with more than two parents into serious legal and financial problems.
