The HIV prevention pill, also known as PrEP, can now be used in Europe for the prevention of HIV. The European Medicines Agency -(EMA) announced the news mid-August. Five interest groups call on Health Minister Schippers to make PrEP available immediately, now the EMA approval has taken away the last condition for introduction in the Netherlands.

Aids Fonds – Soa Aids Nederland, COC Nederland, the Dutch HIV Association, and the Dutch Association of HIV-treating Physicians called on Minister Schippers as early as April to make PrEP available as soon as possible. The Minister then indicated that she did not want to move ahead before official registration by EMA. According to the interest groups, it is vital that Minister Schippers makes the HIV prevention pill available immediately now official registration is a fact.

According to the organizations, it is crucial that the Minister does not hesitate any longer and acts immediately in the fight against HIV. On an annual basis, 1,000 new HIV infections occur in the Netherlands. By quickly adding PrEP to the existing HIV prevention package, the Minister can prevent a large proportion of these infections.

Now, PrEP is only available for the 370 participants in a study by the Health Authority GGD Amsterdam. However, the interest for PrEP is much larger.

The EMA announced that PrEP as a prevention is effective and safe.  Globally, the HIV prevention pill is seen as a necessary complement to existing HIV prevention, such as condoms, testing and prompt treatment. After 30 years of condom promotion, we now know that not everyone will be using condoms (properly) throughout their lifetime; for some, the current prevention methods just do not suffice. Especially for people with a higher risk of contracting HIV, PrEP offers additional and effective protection.

At the International AIDS Conference in Durban it became clear that a number of countries have already made PrEP available, such as the United States, South-Africa, Thailand, France and Australia, or will do so soon, such as Brazil and Kenya.
