This year from September 22 till September 25, the third edition of Rotterdam Pride will take place. For this event, everyone is invited to Rotterdam to celebrate sexual diversity. In addition to a packed arts and culture program, the center of the harbor town will host many parties and celebrations.
On Friday night, September 23, the festive weekend will be ushered in at the Wilhelmina Pier with the start of the Pride Walk, ending with a fantastic opening party at the Schouwburgplein. Everyone is cordially invited to participate in the Pride Walk, the Rotterdam Parade in which sexual diversity is celebrated by and for the young, old, gay, straight, transgender, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, multi-sexual, and culture lover alike. Participants and the public are treated to musical interventions and visual spectacles in all the colors of the rainbow.
This year, the Pride Walk starts at the KPN building on the Kop van Zuid, via the Erasmus Bridge across the center of Rotterdam to end at Schouwburgplein.
Here, the opening to the public will take place with performances, including the joyful Euro disco by Lord of the Lobsters and the eclectic group Cookachoo, one of the most colorful bands in the Netherlands. The Pride Walk starts 17:00 on KPN Square, Wilhelminakade 123 and will reach its destination around 19:00.
During the Rotterdam Pride Talk Show on the night preceding the Walk, September 22, people can start looking for answers to how Rotterdam can be a city where everyone feels at home and coexist with all those differences between citizens. This question gained urgency after the shooting in Orlando and the attacks throughout Europe, as nowadays nearly half of the gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals feel less safe than five years ago. The talk show has topical interviews and debates, alternated with music and theater, and takes place from 19:30-21:30 at Arminius, Museumpark 3, Rotterdam.
On Saturday, the Schouwburgplein will undergo a transformation with a large pitch for the long-stay camping site “Camp Pride.” Interest groups and supporters will present themselves with a private little garden to the public: Welcome to my Backyard. For Camp Pride, activities will be organized from 13:00 up to 20:00.
Visitors can relax in outdoor cafés with food and drinks or at a yoga workshop, or become hysterical at the theatrical performance “My Own Private Disaster” by Moeremans & Sons. Be surprised by performers from Rotterdam, with Miekie Fire & Her Amazing Tribute Band and their new set list “Revival of the Queerest” as a closing act.
The theme of Rotterdam Pride 2016 is “(Un)labelled.” With this theme, Rotterdam Pride examines all existing labels and challenges everyone to “unlabel” by letting everyone be who they are, regardless of label. With this approach and a label-transcending program, Rotterdam Pride wants to appeal to everyone who supports freedom of sexual diversity.
Rotterdam Pride wants to build a bridge between the GLBT and the straight community, with wide programming for the public, ranging from the talk show, a pink church celebration, tours, exhibitions, film, theater and many parties, celebrating sexual diversity for four days. Rotterdam Pride aims to make a positive contribution to the hospitality of Rotterdam, where everyone is welcome and should feel safe.
