With the hoisting of the rainbow flag on the square in front of the County House it is now official: As of July 6, Drenthe is the first Rainbow County of the Netherlands. With the flag, the parliament of Drente wants to give a clear message that it is committed to the safety, resilience and social acceptance of LGBTs.’ Everyone counts in Drente.’

According to those who have fought to make Drente a Rainbow County, the Dutch have a positive attitude towards LGBT residents compared to other countries. But in the Netherlands as well, tolerance is not a matter-of-course. Especially openly expressing homosexuality is still met with disapproval. In Drenthe and the Northern Netherlands violent incidents do take place, and social acceptance can still be advanced.

To take some first steps, the parties GroenLinks, PvdA, SP, D66, VVD, PVV,50PLUS and Sterk Lokaal submitted the motion “Drenthe Rainbow County” at the county meeting of July 6. The motion calls on the Provincial Executive, in cooperation with parties concerned, to promote the security, resilience and social acceptance of LGBT people. The motion was supported by all parties.

Covenant ‘Rainbow Cities’

Minister Jet Bussemaker of Education, Culture and Science signed the covenant ‘Rainbow cities’ with 42 municipalities on October 10, 2014. In it, they state their jointly effort in increasing the social acceptance, security and emancipation of LGBTs. In 2017, all of these municipalities want LGBT emancipation to be permanently anchored into their local policies. With this motion carried, Drenthe can now call itself the first Rainbow County in the Netherlands.
