Works by Tom of Finland and Bob Mizer as Fashion Print

The cover of the “Spring 1957” issue of the American magazine “Physique Pictorial” was adorned with a drawing of a handsome bare-chested muscular young man, balancing on a tree trunk in a river. “Physique Pictorial,” published since 1951 by Bob Mizer, was dedicated to the beauty of the athletic, as scantily dressed as possible male body.

It was therefore highly appreciated by gay men (although it was not allowed to be a straightforward gay magazine because of the pornography laws in the USA). The creator of this exciting young man on the water was the never before published artist Touko Laaksonen, who had chosen Tom of Finland as his pseudonym as his name was unpronounceable for Americans, and he did not want his family name to appear in the magazine.

In the sixty after this magazine debut, Tom of Finland has become an icon in homoerotic art. After his death in 1991 he increasingly became a marketable brand. This especially became evident when a few years ago the renowned Finnish textiles company Finlayson marketed the “Tom of Finland by Finlayson” collection, consisting of satin bed sheets, towels, bath towels, and an exclusive big cotton bag. And for those who want to express their admiration for the Finnish artist in day-to-day life and out and about now also have clothing with Tom of Finland motives at their disposal.

The artist duo Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide-Pierson of Assume Vivid Astro Focus (AVAF) have designed a very creative collection in collaboration with the Tom of Finland Foundation. The artists were granted access to Tom of Finland’s complete archive, so that they could incorporate their own visual language and codes with his body of work. This resulted in a magnificent and exciting blend between artists who are of a different generation, background, and aesthetic expression, but are connected through what can be described as “underground art.” Bridging decades, they also share a preference for alternative expressions of sexual freedom and tolerance.

The “Tom of Finland x AVAF Collection” is marketed by Print All Over Me (https://paom.com). Each garment is printed with some drawings by Tom of Finland in a collage in order to create a colourful and original new piece of art in each item. As the AVAF artists think it is extremely important to involve customers in their work, PAOM clients have a say when they order a product.

Customers can chose from fifty visually exciting components of “Tom of Finland x AVAF” to create their own compositions. The collection contains T-shirts ($51), a jumpsuit ($240), sweat pants ($133) and shorts ($67), tank tops ($48) and sweaters ($133), but also items that are exclusive to this project, for instance the classic motorcycle jacket, as well as accessories including a cap and a rucksack.

As this year it was sixty-five years ago that Bob Mizer launched “Physique Pictorial,” the Bob Mizer Foundation has also expanded to fashion, but significantly less buoyant than the “Tom of Finland x AVAF Collection.” The Foundation comes with a collection of T-shirts, tank-tops and “hoodies,” with iconic photos from Mizer’s archive, for example the motorcycle stud David Mineric, who was on the cover of the November 1962 issue of “Physique Pictorial.”
