Aids Fonds Shocked by Increasing Number of HIV Infections

by our Editors in Health & Body , 18 juli 2016

The Global AIDS Update Report 2016 that was presented on May 31 indicates that 2015 saw 2.1 million new HIV infections. In 2014 UNAIDS reported 2.0 million new infections.

Louise van Deth, Executive Director of the Aids Fonds: "It is a startling break with the downward trend we have seen over the last 20 years. In spite of all world-wide efforts, the number of new HIV infections did not decrease in 2015. This is extremely alarming."

”The most striking increase in HIV infections can be seen in two large hotspots - Eastern-Europe and the Russian Federation, and Central Asia. Countries that refuse to invest in prevention and care, especially for HIV risk groups such as gay men, drug users and sex workers, are causing a new HIV epidemic. Without access to medication, proper sex education and fighting stigmatisation and discrimination, it is impossible to successfully stop AIDS,” Van Deth notes.

The Aids Fonds wants AIDS to be a thing of the past. World-wide. That is only possible if each and everyone is entitled to medication and care, wherever you are, whomever you are.

On the eve of a UN summit on AIDS, Louise van Deth will hand over the petition with the appeal and 13,000 signatures of Dutch people to the he Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen.  Minister Ploumen will represent the Netherlands at the UN summit on AIDS in New York.

AmsterdamDiner raised EUR 650,000

The 24th AmsterdamDiner, the annual benefit gala by Dutch business for the fight against AIDS, has raised EUR 650,000 this year, the same amount as last year.  The money will be mostly spent on scientific research into acute HIV infections, one of the projects of the H-TEAM, the Amsterdam partnership that is working on an HIV-free future.

Proceeds to H-team

For the large part, the proceeds of the AmsterdamDiner are going to the H-TEAM, as they did last year. This team of Dutch scientists and doctors, among other things, are researching acute HIV infections. If an HIV infection is detected quickly enough and treatment with HIV inhibitors is started immediately, the chances of not needing medication after some time become higher. The results could lead to potential medical breakthroughs in the treatment of people with HIV.

I am who I am

This year, the motto of the AmsterdamDiner was ‘I am who I am’. The stigma on HIV and AIDS is still causing extra suffering. The fear of rejection and prosecution by the society they live in still is responsible for people not getting tested or treated, causing unnecessary deaths.

The AmsterdamDiner was attended by more than 1,000 guest, including Princes Mabel van Oranje, fashion designers Victor&Rolf, and three Ministers of the Dutch cabinet - Lilianne Ploumen of Development Cooperation, Foreign Secretary Bert Koenders and Home Secretary Ronald Plasterk. At the auction held, attendees could bid on having diner with Minister Koenders, or on an informal meeting with a cup of tea with the mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laan. The event was hosted by Nicolette Kluijver, ambassador of STOP AIDS NOW!, and singer / comedian Karin Bloemen.

For those of you who know the AmsterdamDiner event from the start, it's nothing like that anymore, it's become Just Another Congress.
