May 21: LGBTI Sports Day Amsterdam

by our Editors in Events & Agenda , 08 mei 2016

More than a thousand Amsterdammers regularly exercise at one of the city's LGBTI sports clubs, and these clubs have now come together to organize Amsterdam’s first joint LGBTI Sports Day. During this public event, members will share what they enjoy about being part of these clubs, which cater to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community. Anyone who is curious, be they LGBTI or straight, is more than welcome to come by on Saturday, May 21 in Amsterdam-Oost.

Athletes will showcase their skills and encourage visitors to take part in workshops. They will be available to share their personal motivation for choosing an LGBTI club. Some people seem to question this choice. Why not join a ‘regular’ sports club?

This festive sports event joins a series of other events focused on the LGBTI community, including the International Day Against Homophobia (May 17) as well as EuroPride, taking place in Amsterdam from July 23 to August 7. Through these events, Amsterdam and its inhabitants will show the world - even more than usual - how they fully support freedom, equal rights and acceptance of LGBTI people.

There is strength in unity, and so a number of LGBTI sports clubs are forming their own sports federation, Pride&Sports Amsterdam. This initiative will facilitate co-operation, leading to more joint activities and promotion of LGBTI sports.

In addition, LGBTI Sports Day will include the debut of the new Pride&Sports Pass. This booklet is filled with information and offers for free training at LGBTI sports clubs. The aim of the Pride&Sports Pass is to motivate more members of the LGBTI community to get off the couch and start moving, and giving a new sport a try might even convince some of them to join an LGBTI club.

On May 21, all activities for the LGBTI Sports Day will take place within walking distance of each other, between 1:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. The main venue for the Sports Day will be Zeeburghal (Insulindeweg 1001, Amsterdam), where the following sports will be represented: volleyball, basketball, badminton, wrestling and krav maga.

Flevopark will be the site of an athletics workshop. The Tie-Breakers tennis club (Valentijnkade 132) will make some courts available to LGBTI tennis players, and hockey will be on display at the entrance to the club. The Universum sports centre (Science Park 306) will be hosting demonstrations of squash.
