Minister Bussemaker (Education, Culture and Science) urges people and organisations to file a report against the headmaster of the Islamic University in Rotterdam. He is regularly and publicly making hateful statements about Kurds, Jews and homosexuals. The Minister informed the Lower House during question time that she would prefer filing a report herself, but that this is not possible for legal reasons.
The representative of coalition party VVD questioned the Minister on this matter on the occasion of a tweet by headmaster Ahmet Akgündüz. He twittered about a Kurdish human rights lawyer Tahir Elçi, who was killed in an attack late November. The text could be interpreted in different ways, but many Kurds see the tweet as a provocation. However, the tweet had been removed after a number of days.
Minister Bussemaker addressed the headmaster and the administration of the university on several occasions, but without much result. She is now working on a bill that would allow her to intervene, also in institutions that are not financed by the government. A large majority of the Dutch Lower House is eager to see the bill introduced. Coalition party VVD is of the opinion that it is all taking too much time.
Report Against Headmaster
In Rotterdam, a report was filed against the headmaster of the Islamic University in this city. Local PvdA member Latif Tali filed a report based on discrimination and sowing hatred, he said in NTRs radio show 1 Op Straat. Organisations that are affiliated with the Federation of Kurds in the Netherlands (FedKom) have also filed a complaint, Mr Tali stated. He himself is affiliated with FedKom as well.
