Letter from Brussels: As Was Said

by De Ket in Columns & Opinions , 31 december 2015

Dear Neighbors to the North, Another year is almost over, and just like last semester, the Flemish media was full of reports on the gay community. Below, a small anthology of the last semester.

“I am gay, not a monster. The catholic church is full of homosexuals. Gays in the church should hate themselves.” (Krzystof Charamsa, the Polish priest / theologist who had an important post at the Vatican until he came out of the closet and was dismissed, in “Nieuwsblad”)

“Gay men among bishops as well.” (Prof. Dr. Rik Torfs, vice-chancellor Catholic University Leuven and theologist in “Het Laatste Nieuws”)

“In my TV period I did not know I was gay. I certainly am not the only one who found out at a later stage in life.” (51-year-old Johan Verstreken, former VRT host and current MP for the CD&V, about his late coming out, on

“We were abused and threatened for two years, just because we are gay.” (A gay couple about experiencing insults and threats for two years in the multicultural Rabotwijk in Gent where they life, in “Het Laatste Nieuws”)

“Non-action of Gent police in case of gay hate was communication error.” (Gent’s police commissioner Filip Rasschaert, in a response to a gay hate incident in the Rabotwijk in Gent, on

“This price is a piece of good luck for the entire government. Thankfully, the respect for gay rights is very big in Belgium. I am happy to live in a country that offers equal rights to everyone without distinction. Unfortunately this is not the case everywhere.” (Response of Prime Minister Charles Michel, after the announcement he will be given the OUTtv Media Award)

“I was married with children. I worked in construction and as a doorman. I play rugby. I meet all the macho clichés, so how can I be gay?” (British rugby player Keegan Hirst after his coming out in the British media, in “Het Nieuwsblad”)

“No where in the Koran is GLB condemned.” (Carim Bouzian, Belgian-Moroccan politician, on

“I am discriminated against for not being gay.” (Kanye West, fashion designer and husband of Kim Kardashian, is looking for a reason why his career as a fashion designer is not taking off, in “Het Nieuwsblad”)

“I am gay, have sex without a condom and am not afraid of HIV.” (Campaign of the Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde in Antwerp looking for 200 gay men willing to cooperate in a PrEP study, in “De Standaard”)

“Every human being deserves respect, including homosexuals.” (The new archbishop Jozef De Kesel in an interview on the VTM news)

Yours sincerely,

De Ket
