Experimental and Erotic Masculine Masters

This year, Gallery MooiMan organizes a four-part series of exhibitions in which thematic visions on the male in international art are displayed. With these exhibitions, the gallery wants to show how versatile the theme “the male” can be in art. The first part, “The new Figurative Men,” was on show this spring. Later this year, it will be followed by “The New Classic Men.”

The gallery is also showing how it managed to cover the entire Dutch language speaking world from Groningen to Antwerp, as the Flemish branch will actively organize the third part of this series: “The Erotic Men.”
Experimental Men

In the second part of “Masculine Masters,” “The Experimental Men,” the experiment in art is expressed in experimental video and film, silk screen prints, book designs, drawings, photography, cross-stitch and contemporary embroidery, figures, and sculptures in ceramics, wood and epoxy resins. The exhibition will also run the 90-minute film “One Zero One” by the German film-maker and journalist Tim Lienhard, in which drag performers BayBJane (Mourad) and Cybersissy (Antoine Timmermans) express their boundless creativity on the stages of the international party scene.

With this group exhibition, the gallery shows well-known, mostly Dutch artists, for example Hans Abbing, pastel drawings, photography and video; Ton of Holland, drawings, contemporary embroidery on canvas; Dennis Koot, book designs and silk screen prints; Hinrich Kröger (Germany), sculptures and ceramics; Antoine Timmermans, cross-stitch photography, “One Zero One” movie/performance; Marcel Warmenhoven, sculptures in wood, bronze and epoxy resins.
Hans Abbing’s work consists of paintings and graphics, in which he increasingly focuses on experimental heads and nudes, both in drawings as in photography, with distortion playing an important part. Next to his drawings and photography work, the video “The long way home” will also be shown.

Ton of Holland is a very multi-disciplinarian artist who is also working as a professor at the Technical University of Delft and the Royal Academy in The Hague. His use of numerous techniques is unprecedented. The bold new series “medical body jewels” is proof of this. It shows contemporary embroidery as a combination of photography and embroidery on canvas, resulting in various abstract compositions.

The hip and versatile Dennis Koot is a graphic designer who shows a series of experimental pin-up silk screen prints next to his book designs for “Es Geht Auch Ohne,” for which he collaborated with Ton of Holland. Not for nothing it was rewarded with the silver European Design Award in 2013. Hinrich Kröger is an artist from Berlin who looks for the ceramic experiment in his metier with unusual combinations that are exactly on the borderline between art and kitsch. By doing so, he creates an imaginative ground-breaking world of his own.

Antoine Timmermans does not only show his cross-stitch photo collages that are printed on canvas, in which he incorporated the embroidery he produced over the years, but he also shows his experiments with garments that became living art objects through drag performances. Marcel Warmenhoven shares his vision on the people of the Dutch province of Zeeland in his typical robust idiom for males, in which he shows the experimental in his unusual layering of used materials.

Erotic men

For six months now, Gallery MooiMan is in collaboration with bookstore ’t Verschil in Antwerp. Every two months, the gallery organizes a new exhibition in the arched basement of the book store’s building in the heart of Antwerp. The exhibition “Masculine Masters III: The Erotic Men” reveals a thrilling combination of Flemish and German erotica in which, in more than one way, the artists - the Belgian Wim Beulens, drawings, and the German Ivo Blanck, bronze statues - influence and surpass each other.

Wim Beulens was born and raised in Vilvoorde, a former industrial town near Brussels. From the age of sixteen, he attended the Sint Lukas Institute in Brussels, followed by Art School in Antwerp. Here, his love for drawing was awakened during an obligatory, but not easy main subject: drawing live nudes. Just as with every artist with aspirations in “gay art,” both Tom of Finland and Harry Bush are the giants that are impossible to ignore as examples. At this first exhibition of the artist, his powerful and (still) affordable drawings are on show. Later this year, his first book will be published.
Sculptor Ivo Blanck was born in 1958 in Göttingen and is a self-taught artist living in Hamburg since 1980. In sculpture, he focuses on nudes, portraits, caricatures and masks, but also on abstracts. Since 2011, more and more of his works are cast in bronze. The bronze figures of men and boys by Ivo Blanck that can be viewed in this exhibition seem to be in a state in between deep relaxation and pure erotic ecstasy: emerged in a deep dream, lying on the beach, or sitting on a tree-stump, but also intimately wrapped into each other.
