Through the Eye of Time; Reve Photos by Eddy Posthuma de Boer

From the 1960s onwards to Gerard Reve’s death in 2006, photographer Eddy Posthuma regularly visited the popular (gay) author to portray him, sometimes on assignment from a newspaper or publisher, but also on his own initiative. Reve loved to pose, and wanted to look good on the picture.

To him, having his photograph taken had a deeper meaning: “You expose your soul to a photographer.” Some of the pictures Eddy Posthuma de Boer took of Reve became iconic, for instance the covers of the collections “Nader tot U” (Nearer to Thee) and “Op weg naar het einde” (Towards the End).

Other pictures remained in the archive of the photographer, waiting for the moment they would be presented in conjunction with one another.

Jointly, these photographs of Gerard Reve by Eddy Posthuma de Boer offer a touching perspective on the gradually ageing writer. The attractive and characterful young man that Reve was in the prime of his life, is gradually replaced by a man with his “soul” increasingly showing through his decline into old age.

As time went by, the décor becomes more sober and commonplace; with the surprising effect that the viewer sees the ageing author increasingly sharper. But whether they are “early” or “late” photos, they all show a very present Reve. Visually, the lovingly portrayed Reve remains an eye-catcher.

Eddy Posthuma de Boer’s photos of Gerard Reve are shown until June 30 in the Reve Museum on the second floor of the central building of the Public Library (OBA), Oosterdokskade 143. The library is open daily from 10:00-22:00.
