Straight Teenage Boys More Homophobic

An Australian study shows that in spite of the fact that there is a lot of support for gay marriage, the message: 'It is OK to be gay or lesbian, still does not come across with youth.

The survey by BeyongBlue shows that one third of teenage boys do not want to be friends with gays or lesbians, and that two thirds of these teenage boys say they have witnessed homophobic bullying.

The Australian national depression initiative BeyondBlue interviewed 14 to 17 year old boys. The survey also revealed that one in five still finds it difficult to treat a homosexual the same way they would treat a heterosexual. And six in ten say that they personally have witnessed homophobic bullying, and four in ten witnessed homophobic bullying via social media.

Also, one in four say that using words such as 'queen' or 'dyke' to describe someone who is homosexual or lesbian, is not necessary meant in a bad way. One in four also says that calling someone 'queer' when they are not is not a bad thing. Four in ten boys say they feel uncomfortable around gay boys, and as many say it is a problem if someone in their circle of friends turns out to be gay.

BeyondBlue comes with these statistics to draw attention to their campaign 'Stop Think Respect, Left Hand'. They want to spread the message that bullying someone for being gay is as stupid as bullying someone for being left-handed. It not being so very long ago that the left-handed were excluded and even bullied, especially because from a religious point of view, being left-handed was the work of the devil.

BeyondBlue is of the opinion that this campaign is very much needed, as earlier figures also showed that homophobia is very present among heterosexual boys. And we now know that the suicide numbers are much higher under LGBT youth than straight youth, something they want to fight too.
