Irish senators have approved a bill on the right of adoption by gay and lesbian couples. The Lower House had already passed the bill at an earlier stage. Now, the LGBT community only has to wait for the Irish president Michael D Higgings to sign it.
The Children and Family Relationship Bill was approved with 20 votes in favour and 2 against. After the vote, a spontaneous and standing ovation followed.
On May 22, the Irish can have their say in a referendum on gay marriage, with campaigns of both opponents and advocates in full swing.
A recent poll suggests that 75% of the Irish is in favour of gay marriage.
