The Aesthetic of Man

by our Editors in Theatre, Art & Expo , 06 september 2014

At the moment, the exhibition “The Aesthetic of Man” can be seen at the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam. The exhibition is put together by Diederick van der Lee (26), and its theme is the image of men through the eyes of men. The show sheds new light on the collection of the museum, which houses the archeological collection of the University of Amsterdam.

Several side-activities will be programmed on the occasion of the exhibition, including a symposium on August 29, and a meeting of the Defense Department. The theme’s appeal and the potential social impact of a debate about the exhibition, show how relevant the ancient times still are.

What different ideas did the idealized classical Greek discus thrower and the romanticized nude Eros sculptures represent? What does “the male” symbolize when he is both subject and object, in a world in which only men are creating culture? With ancient objects, the exhibition looks at the image of man, man as the perfect human being, the ideal self and even as an object of desire for other men. By looking at ancient objects at close quarters, and by providing them with new text and interpretations, it becomes clear how universal the human emotion is in its motivation to create.

In order to make this agelessness visible, the museum collection is mirrored to a selection of photos of prominent international artists. This contemporary art underlines the visibility and palpability of what the academically based and historical aspects of the exhibition cannot put into words. The artists have a deep connection with the subject, and approach it from their own point of view. They are fascinated by the search for the man, whether it is in Philos or in Pathos. The group of represented artists consists of photographers Brett Lloyd (London), Paul Scala (London), Maciej Toporowicz (New York), Sergey Melnitchenko (Ukraine), Martin C. de Waal (The Netherlands), and graphic designer Peter de Voogt (The Netherlands).

“The Aesthetic of Man” runs until September 21, and is open to the public between 10:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday to Friday, and from 13:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Allard Pierson Museum, Oude Turfmarkt 127, 1012 GC Amsterdam.
