by our Editors in Health & Body , 24 juli 2014

Not because Angela Merkel is in favour, as she is also against "gay marriage", but because she was forced by judgement from the German Constitutional Court that puts same-sex couples level with straight couples for assessing income tax, creating equal tax rights for same-sex couples.

By equating fiscal rights, they now have rights to living allowances, child benefits, and tax benefits for making provisions for old age.

The German Parliament has unanimously voted in favour of changing the text in over twenty laws. The Bundesrat, in which all federal states are represented, still has to vote on the bill, but this is a formality.
