Australian ‘Gay Healer’ To Discontinue Activities

The evangelical organisation Living Waters Australia has explained in a newsletter to its supporters that its activities will cease. The organisation offers a form of pseudo-psychotherapy to ‘liberate people from unwanted gay feelings.’

Australian LGBT organisations applauded the shut-down of the ‘gay healer.’
The newsletter explains that the organisation will shut down because there are not enough people enlisting for this ´gay therapy,´ and because of ´changes´ in views on homosexuality in their churches and among believers. It is a fact that increasingly, Australian churches are adopting a more open attitude towards believers that are open about their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

Living Waters Australia was allied to Desert Stream Ministries/Living Water, an American evangelical organisation, founded and led by Andrew Comiskey. His views were heavily influenced by the homophobic work of ‘healer’ Leanne Payne. Comiskey also thinks that conversion therapy can cure homosexuality. This is why he heavily criticised Alan Chambers, the leader of Exodus International, when he announced in 2013 that he rejected ‘gay healing,’ and partly because of this had decided to shut down Exodus International. In reaction to this, Comiskey and a number of other hard-liners founded the Restored Hope Network to continue spreading their ‘body of thought.’

Living Waters also has a branch in The Netherlands, and this branch is working with the Different foundation. This foundation is part of the foundation Tot Heil des Volks, which is based in Amsterdam. On the website of the foundation Tot Heil des Volks, the Dutch language version of Comiskey's book ‘Strength in Weakness’ (Kracht in Zwakheid) can be ordered. This book ‘on forgiveness and recovery after relational and sexual sin’ has even been published by the foundation itself.

Australian LGBT organisations applauded the news of the shut-down, especially since it will mean that, after the shutdown of Living Waters Australia, there are only a handful of organisations left that are still offering 'gay healing' in Australia.
