During the Easter weekend, Tijgertje organizes the Tenth Gay & Lesbian International Easter Badminton Tournament Amsterdam. Foundation Tijgertje started in 1982 with self-defense classes after gays and lesbians were beaten up by gay-bashers during the Pink Saturday in Amersfoort. By now, Tijgertje has developed into an extremely versatile sporting club with a wide range of sports, including badminton.
The badminton group trains on Wednesdays from 19:00 to 23:00, and on Sundays from 16:30 to 19:00. The trainings are at different levels, from beginners to the advanced who have been playing for years. On Wednesdays, they share the sports center with two other clubs, but on Sundays, all nine courts of Sporthal de Pijp are available to Tijgertje. Then, there is enough space for everyone to practice. Nobody is side-lined, unless they feel like chatting to co-players, for example to exchange the latest gossip. The group of players at Tijgertje Badminton is just as varied as the people of Amsterdam. Its members are from all over the world, and especially Asia, where badminton is a national sport, is well represented.
The Tenth Gay & Lesbian International Easter Badminton Tournament Amsterdam takes place from the 18th until the 21st of April 2014 in Sporthal de Pijp in Amsterdam. Again this year, about 250 gay and lesbians from all over the world will compete. People can register via www.tijgertje-badminton.nl/easter. The registration closes on the 11th of April, or when the maximum of 250 participants has been reached.
The program consists of the following: On Friday the 18th of April, the registration of the participants will take place from 18:00-22:00. From 10:00-18:00 on Saturday the 19th of April, the men’s and women’s singles and mixed will be held, followed by the men’s and women’s doubles from 10:00-18:00 on Sunday the 20th of April. So splurge out and show off, make yourself be seen. Just use your imagination and creativity, and wear something fancy, colorful, outrageous, anything that’s beautiful and catches our eye, and you can become a winner off the badminton courts too! The Badminton Easter Party concludes this Sunday from 22:00-03:00.
The weekend is officially closed with an Easter Brunch from 11:00-14:00 on Monday the 21st of April.
Participation in the tournament costs forty Euro, including lunch and a ticket to the party on Sunday. There is no discount for players only participating on one of the two days of the tournament. There is a separate fee for the brunch on Monday. Shuttles are made available by the organization: feather shuttles for players at A-level, and plastic ones for players on B- and C-level.
