German Soccer Association to start coming out support group

by our Editors in General , 19 maart 2013

The German Soccer Association, the Deutscher Fussball-Bund (DFB), has set up a working group in order to prepare and support soccer clubs in the event of players coming out of the closet. The working group has representatives of the DFB, external experts and a former professional soccer player who is gay.

Sports sociologist Prof. Dr. Gunter A. Pilz will become the chairperson of the group. “We will draw up an internal handbook,” he announced. “The intention is to support clubs with a coming out.” Mr. Pilz does not know of any gay soccer players who want to come out of the closet. “It is up to them.”

Marcus Urban, a former player of German second division team Rot-Weiß Erfurt, has also joined the working group. He came out of the closet in the nineties. “We want to show that soccer isn't gay-intolerant, even though it is sometimes labelled as such.”

Both former DFB president Theo Zwanziger and present Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel encouraged professional soccer players to come out of the closet.
