COC Netherlands is very happy that a large majority in Dutch parliament voted in favor of the proposal for lesbian parenthood, as well as VVD member Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert’s amendment.
The proposal of vice minister Fred Teeven (Security and Justice) makes it possible for lesbian mothers, just like heterosexual fathers, to go to city hall and register her child. Until now they first had to go through a lengthy (months), expensive and emotionally exhausting adoption procedure in order to arrange the legal relationship with the baby.
Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert’s amendment also gives the so-called duo-mother the possibility to go to court when there’s a conflict over legal parenthood / custody. COC Netherlands had asked for this amendment as otherwise only the biological father would have been given this right.
According to COC chair Tanja Ineke the legislation is a ‘breakthrough for the equal rights position of lesbian parents and their children.’ COC Netherlands has been lobbying for an improvement of the arrangements for lesbian parents and their children.
The proposal was supported by CDA (Christian Democrats), D66 (Liberal Democrats), GroenLinks (Green), PvdA (Social Democrats), Partij voor de Dieren (Animal Rights Party), PVV (Populist Nationalist), SP (Socialists), VVD (liberals) and 50Plus (Elderly). Only the ChristenUnie (Christian) and SGP (Orthodox Reformed) voted against. The proposal has now been sent to the Senate.
