End to Different-therapy coverage seems in sight

It looks like the health insurance coverage of the gay therapy of Tot Heil des Volks/Different will be scrapped. That’s because a number of health insurance companies have decided to stop covering treatments via EuroPsyche.

‘This is an important step forwards,’ says chairman Vera Bergamo of COC Netherlands. ‘But we’re going for a fundamental decision so that the Different therapy could never qualify for coverage by health insurance again.’

For years health insurance companies have covered alternative treatments as psychiatric care via EuroPsyche and spent millions on organizations like Tot Heil des Volks/Different. The insurance companies stopped the coverage when it came out that the services were not conducted by registered psychiatrics of psychotherapists, as is required by law.

Six million fraudulent declarations

This surfaced when EuroPsyche took health insurance company CZ to court on the 2nd of May. EuroPsyche demanded CZ to pay 700.000 Euros in declarations over 2011. CZ in turn thinks that EuroPsyche cashed at least six million Euros falsely over 2010 and 2011.

EuroPsyche was put in the spotlight early this year when it became known that the company indirectly covered the anti-gay therapy of Tot Heil des Volks/Different and charged the health insurance for it. This caused a commotion and the Inspection Bureau for Public Health (IGZ) held an inquiry. They found that Different did not employ registered psychotherapists, did not come to right diagnoses and did not design proper treatment plans. On top of that they found that clients were not adequately informed.

Chairman Vera Bergkamp of COC Netherlands is happy that payments via EuroPsyche is something of the past. ‘This will also be the end of the coverage of the Different therapy,’ she says. ‘But what we really need is a fundamental decision on this kind of anti-gay therapies. They don’t deserve to be in any health insurance package, let’s hope the Minister of Health will take that decision.’
