On Thursday the 5th of April the board of COC Netherlands awarded Björn van Roozendaal with the Bob Angelo Charter.
The COC awards the Bob Angelo Charter to people or organizations that have done something special for the advancement of LGBT emancipation. Björn van Roozendaal was decorated because of his excellent work to promote LGBT rights internationally.
His effort was professional, working at COC Netherlands international department between 2004 and 2012, but also as a volunteer he worked for the (international) LGBT-community: as marketing manager of the magazine Expreszo (2002-2004), as chairman of IGLYO (2004-2007) and as board member of ILGA Europe (2009-2011). He played an important role in defining the organization’s international policy and creating a global network. It was because of his work also, that COC Netherlands was the first LGBT organization to acquire a Consultative Status at the United Nations.
As the chairman Van Roozendaal transformed the LGBT- IGLYO into a realistic and pragmatic operating youth organization, working on a European level to improve the position and working conditions of LGBT youth. His efforts were recognized when in 2007 Euronederlander.nl elected him European Youngster of the Year.
As a board member of ILGA Europe he focused on a much-needed re-enforcement of the organization structure. From 2010 he’s been secretary of the PlanetRomeo Foundation, which supports LGBT activities in education, culture, health, emancipation and sports projects.
Chair Vera Bergkamp handed Björn van Roozendaal his Bob Angelo Charter on Thursday the 5th of April. It was at the occasion of his last day at COC-Netherlands so it was the first time a COC-manager was honored in this way. Van Roozendaal has accepted a position with ILGA Europe in Brussels.
