STD clinics will aim mainly at higher-risk groups

The state institute for public health and the environment (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid & Milieu) publicized in newspaper Metro that the Dutch STD clinics will select their clients more carefully this year. People that don’t belong to higher-risk groups will be referred to their GP. This stricter selection is meant to make the STD specific care more efficient as well as cut costs. There are 26 STD clinics where clients are tested freely and anonymously. They are suffering from their own success: more and more people use them.

The first half of 2011 showed an increase of about 10% to 54.648. In 2010 it went up with 13%. The RIVM is trying to halt the increasing spending.

As from this year anonymity is not the only valid reason for a consult. The RIVM wants to aim mainly at people from high risk groups. For example men that have sex with other men, men that frequent prostitutes or people from areas with high percentages of HIV infections.

Other people that have a valid reason for not wanting to consult their GP for a test are also still welcome at the STD clinic. From now on youngsters outside the higher-risk groups will only be tested on Chlamydia. Only if that test comes back positive, they will be tested on gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV. This based on the findings that youngsters rarely have any STD if they don’t also have Chlamydia.

The stricter selection is also to cut costs because a test with a GP is covered by health insurances. The STD centers are meant for people that don’t have easy access to their GPs. The RIVM thinks that the STD clinics should go back to that main principle.
