Comic Strip Creators Bellefleur And Van Der Steen In Book About Sixty Years Dutc

by Editorial Staff in Media & entertainment , 15 november 2011

On September 12, publishing firm Marmer published the book “Mr. TV: Over leven in TV-land” (Mr. TV: About Life in TV Land) by Bert van der Veer. This book, which was published in honor of television’s sixtieth anniversary in The Netherlands, also includes cartoons and comic strips. Earlier this year, a request for contributions from the author and producer Endemol, led to an avalanche of submissions.

From these, Peter Adrichem (general manager of Endemol Netherlands Media Group), Bert van der Veer (author and program maker), Hein van Putten (Volkskrant Magazine) and Tonio van Vugt (Zone5300) made a selection for both the book Mr. TV, and the exhibition “Teeveestrip,” which opened on September 12th in MediArena Amsterdam.

Work by Dolly Bellefleur was also selected. In collaboration with Wilbert van der Steen, Dolly made a special episode of the comic strip “Made in Dolland.”

In the book, Bert van der Veer, who turned sixty himself in 2011, looks back at sixty years of television. Over the years he was involved in starting up new channels, worked on controversial shows, and initiated important developments. In a montage of stories, columns, reviews and memories, he offers an inside look into his world: that of television. How do you survive TV hell? How do you develop a successful format for a TV show?

But also: how do you sell it? Van der Veer also tells about his adventures as director of “Toppop,” as creator of talk show “Barend & Van Dorp,” as Veronica’s “porn boss”, and as an “expert” on various shows. And everything is illustrated with remarkable photos and lively contributions by more than forty Dutch and Belgian (strip) cartoonists and illustrators.

Beauty with Brains Dolly Bellefleur (1989) has been the alter-ego of performer and text writer Ruud Douma for twenty-two years now. Dolly is no stranger to the world of comic strips since 2006, when she opened the Comic Strip Days Haarlem.

At the invitation of George Moormann (poet and publisher of literary magazine “De Zingende Zaag”), Ruud Douma a.k.a. Dolly Bellefleur made some contributions to the remarkable poetry comic book “Verknipt en Verstript” (De Zingende Zaag, 2006) in collaboration with Gerrie Hondius. For her anniversary exhibition “Van hem naar haar naar Hippolytushoef: 20 jaar Dolly Bellefleur,” Dolly partnered up with several cartoonists and illustrators, who made comics out of lyrics from La Bellefleur’s versatile repertoire.

In collaboration with Wilbert van der Steen, the biweekly comic strip “Made in Dolland” is published on the Internet since August 2010. Van der Steen (1966) illustrates and depicts his own and other people’s stories since 1993. Besides children’s books, he also made cartoons for “Food Magazine” and “De Gay Krant.”
