Huge turn up at EuroPride in Rome

Hundreds of thousands of people joined the Euro Parade Rome in the final event of EuroPride 2011. The parade went through the centre of Rome to Circus Maximus where Lady Gaga performed for an estimated crowd of 1 million. She sang ‘Born this Way’ and encouraged her audience in this historic Circus Maximus to be revolutionaries of love. The American pop star criticized governments in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, where young people are forced to live a life in isolation and discrimination.

‘We all have the same DNA, we were simply born this way,’ Gaga states. ‘As a woman of the world and together with you I call upon governments all over the world to make our dream of equality come true.’
The organization of EuroPride Rome sent a message to the Vatican and to the Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi. The Vatican is trying to stop gay rights for gays. There’s no protection from homophobe violence in Italy and same sex couples are not recognized. The parade took place without any trouble.

This was not the case however, at a few other Gay Parades:
In the Croatian Split the first gay parade got completely out of hand. The three-hundred participants were pelted with eggs, bottles and stones. Five people had to go to hospital.

Activists of extreme-right disrupted the gay parade in Warsaw also, as in previous years. They shouted insults and threw fireworks at the participants.
