Belgian lesbian icon Yasmine passed away

by Editorial Staff in Media & entertainment , 06 september 2009

The singer and television host Yasmine died at 37. She was going through an emotionally rough period because of her pending divorce from her wife Marianne Dupont. This is possibly also the reason for her suicide. Yasmine, whose real name was Hilde Rens, had a two-year old daughter Ella Louise with Marianne Dupont, who was publicly known as the winner of a television program.

The musicians Yasmine worked with and her colleagues at the tv-station express their shock. Channel coordinator Jean Philip De Tender responds: “I and all my colleagues at Eén and the VRT are very sad to hear this news. Yasmine was one of the most all-round tv-hosts and singers of Flanders. This had been clear from the first day she came to work here. We have unexpectedly lost a very pleasant and talented colleague.”

Yasmine was also a lesbian icon. Ten years ago she came out of the closet as a lesbian and started a relationship with Alexandra Potvin. The news of her suicide came as a huge shock to Yvan Brys, spokesperson of Çavaria (former gay, lesbian, bisexual federation). “We heard the news just after our conference in Antwerp, it ended all enthusiasm we had over our newly adopted name. Yasmine was very important for the new generation of holebi’s. The informal relaxed way she was openly gay was an inspiration for many of us.” Çavaria and Wel Jong Niet Hetero (Young but not Straight), the national non-straight youth movement, offer Yasmine’s friends and family their sincere sympathy.

Yasmine was born on the 3rd of March 1972 as Hilde Rens. Her career starts in 1990 when she enters as Madonna in De Soundmixshow. Shortly after she releases her first single: ‘Wie denk jij wel dat je bent?’ (Who do you think you are?) and the hits Vraag me niet waarom (Don’t ask me why) en Hoog in de Wolken (High in the clouds). After a few years of poppy songs she changes her tune and releases more serious work, like: Porcelein and Meisjes aan de macht (Girls in Power).

A few years ago she toured cultural centers with a show with Dutch versions of Leonard Cohen’s songs. She became a familiar face on tv. Before she started at the public channel she presented a few years for VTM and was the face of Super 50. Later at VTR she was also host and the face of De Rode Loper (Red Carpet) and Zo is er maar één (There’s only one like that).

At the end of April Yasmine and Marianne announce their ten-year relationship is over. They were married and had a daughter. The break-up was said to be caused by the busy schedule of both women. The news of the break-up came as a surprise and Yasmine was said to take it badly.
