Lots of plans for Gay Pride 2008

by Editorial Staff in Nightlife & Reports , 16 juli 2008

A bit later than we’re used to.... but here they are, the first plans for Gay Pride 2008. But we’re confused already. A few years ago GBA was the only organizer, now there are several. Pro Gay, Hugo Braakhuis’ organization that took over from GBA, is now chaired by Frank van Dalen. He states in a press release that he’s going to stage the Canal Parade and claims to go for “content and broadening of the scope of the event. The Parade itself will be organized by bureau O=4.

Siep de Haan’s GBA presents itself with ‘Faith, Hope and Love. Siep de Haan issued a statement that said ‘Religion will be a central theme next Pride, which will take place from the 28th of July till the 3rd of August. Last year religion and gays have repeatedly clashed; about civil servants refusing to marry gay couples or whether gay priests and other gay believers can share in the Last Supper or not. Christianity as well as Islam has a tense relationship with homosexuality. During Pride we want to look at what we share, not so much at what sets us apart.”

To clarify things somewhat De Haan mentions a group of organizers he calls Gay Seven. These are said to have decided together to organize Pride 2008. Together they have 15 of the total of 17 licenses of Pride, claims De Haan. The declaration they sent to the mayor they say: “Together we want to take care of the marketing of Gay Pride, as well as a cultural and sports program. The GBA will have overall coordination.”

Pro Gay is the only one that hasn’t joined this group. De Haan: “They are more than welcome to join ‘Gay Seven’, we want to have a great Pride, but we can’t force them. The aim is to leave all discussions and fights behind us and go for the best Pride ever. The last two years international marketing, culture and sports have disappeared and it’s time to revive these.”

Indeed, when you look at the sports activities: until 2005 Pride had about ten different competitions going. After Pro Gay took over the sports program shrunk to two half arsed attempts. So this year we’ll also see a comeback of sports in the Pride program.
You know what’s going to happen now? Sorry, we can’t get it any clearer.
